Hiring Gen Z: What Actually Attracts This Generation to Your Workplace? (Part 1)

Gen Z are people born between 1997 and 2012. They will be entering the workforce, and in many cases already have. While previous generations were known for working to the bone, Gen Z has taken a new approach. When searching for a new job, work-life balance, company values, and culture are priorities. This generation brings passion, a new perspective, and a tech-savvy skillset that will help your organization succeed. In this two-part blog post, we’ll explore some unique tactics employers can use to become more attractive to Gen Z.

1. Opportunities for Growth

This younger generation is eager to learn, grow, and develop professionally. When seeking a new position, they want employers who offer opportunities for personal and professional development. Gen Z is not averse to job hopping. However, they will stay if you offer them a chance to learn new skills. Companies can invest in areas like mentorship programs, access to educational resources, volunteer time off, and ‘in-office’ training that shows support for their employees’ personal and professional growth.

2.Making a Positive Impact

Gen Z is passionate about making a positive impact on the world. They are drawn to companies that share their sense of purpose. They seek out employers who demonstrate a commitment to social and environmental causes. Employers should communicate their mission and values clearly and authentically. Highlighting sustainable practices and community engagement efforts can help showcase an organization’s commitment to making a difference. Ultimately, this generation wants to feel that their personal values are heard and align with the company’s mission.

3.Mental Health & Self Care

Mental health and self-care are a top priority for Gen Z. One approach some companies have begun taking is offering benefits such as subscriptions to apps like BetterHelp or Headspace, which offer mental health support right at their fingertips. Additionally, companies can consider offering more flexibility to their work structure, such as remote work options or flexible work hours, to meet the demands of work-life balance. By doing so, companies can also demonstrate their trust in their employees and foster a more collaborative and productive work environment.

4. Feeling Valued

Between their awareness of social and environmental issues and their ability to utilize technology, there are many benefits to hiring Gen Z. One approach to optimizing their skills is implementing reverse mentorship. This program offers junior employees the chance to share their knowledge, skills, and abilities with more senior employees. Reverse mentorship offers an opportunity for employees to collaborate and can foster a strong company culture, all while improving these skill sets within the company. This will also allow your more junior employees to feel valued within the company.

5. The Desire for Inclusivity and Diversity

Gen Z values inclusion and diversity and will seek out employers who foster an inclusive work environment. They look for organizations where their employees have been vocal about feeling respected and valued. They appreciate companies prioritizing and demonstrating diversity and inclusion through their hiring practices and diversity training programs. Gen Z gravitates towards employers who are transparent about their efforts towards inclusivity and diversity.

These are a few of the ways to attract Gen Z employees to your organization. By understanding and addressing these priorities, companies can attract top talent from this innovative and tech-savvy generation.
